Event Details

The Somalia Development and Reconstruction Bank (SDRB) seeks to support the development of Somalia's small-scale fisheries sector. The fisheries industry is crucial to the country's economy, contributing significantly to food security, employment, and export revenues. Despite its importance, the sector remains underdeveloped, with limited infrastructure, outdated fishing techniques, and inadequate market access. This workshop aims to address the challenges faced by small-scale fishermen and identify opportunities for growth and investment.

Somalia has the longest coastline in continental Africa and offers significant marine resources. However, small-scale fisheries contribute minimally to the economy due to constraints such as poor infrastructure, limited technological resources, and inadequate market linkages. To unlock the sector's full potential, targeted interventions are required. The workshop will bridge the knowledge gap in socio-economic aspects of the fisheries industry and develop tailored solutions to enhance its growth.

The workshop has three main objectives: 1. Data Collection: Gather comprehensive data on small-scale fisheries operations, including fishing methods, financial needs, market access, and operational challenges. 2. Market Analysis: Identify challenges and opportunities within the local fish markets, assess market dynamics, and propose solutions to increase market access and product quality. 3. Investment pipelines and support services: Develop targeted interventions, including tailored financial products, Business Development programs, and partnerships that will enhance the sector's competitiveness and sustainability.
